24. PROBLEM GAMBLING IN THE ASIAN-CANADIAN COMMUNITY IN CALGARY -- Project Approved 2002-03
Dr. Daniel Lai (Principal Investigator)
Faculty of Social Work, University of Calgary
Research on problem gambling in visible minority populations is grossly lacking. This project explored the meaning of gambling and problem gambling among the Asian community (one of the largest visible minority groups in Canada) in Calgary. It also studied the impacts of socio-cultural factors that contribute to the problem.
Status (Complete):
Eighty qualitative interviews were completed with members of the Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, South Asian, and Filipino communities in Calgary. In addition, focus groups for the South Asian, Filipino, and Chinese communities were also completed and analyzed. The results obtained for this study have served to promote better understanding of the cultural meanings, implications, and challenges facing several ethnic minority communities in Calgary. They will also prove valuable for larger-scale survey research that examines gambling in other ethnic communities.
Preliminary research findings were presented at the Alberta Gaming Research Institute’s Research Reveals poster exhibits in Calgary, Lethbridge and Edmonton which took place in October 2004. It is anticipated that two articles reporting on the completed research results will be published in scholarly peer-reviewed journals.
