Overall, this project will attempt to provide descriptive and exploratory information about help-seeking and behaviour change in problem gamblers. Specifically, the project will: 1) assess measures of Transtheoretical Model constructs as they relate to problem gambling behaviour, 2) attempt to gain an understanding of what motivates problem gamblers to attempt behaviour change and/or to seek assistance to effect that change, and 3) explore and describe different aspects of and influences on help-seeking from the PGs' point of view and in their own words, with particular attention to the roles of insight and attitudes toward help-seeking.
Status (Complete)
Results from focus groups and preliminary quantitative data have been presented at several conferences. These results provide preliminary descriptive information about problem gamblers’ help-seeking behaviour. In terms of the quantitative follow-up study, preliminary data providing information about help-seeking behaviour among problem gamblers is available and has been presented at two conferences. Results are expected to have a significant impact on our knowledge of problem gamblers’ perceptions about help-seeking and their actual help-seeking behaviours.
