This study will develop a grounded theory that explores the nature and role of trauma among female problem gamblers. A sample of 45-50 adult females within Alberta, who meet the inclusion criteria, will be invited to participate in the study. The results of this research will add to the limited literature addressing factors underlying female problem gambling.
Status (April 2011)
Data collection and analysis have been completed. To date, extensive interviews with 34 women have been completed. A refined first draft of the mid range grounded theory is now ready for sharing with study participants. Currently, two team members are in the process of conducting member checks with three study participants. Team members continue to meet regularly to discuss theoretical refinements and plans for the future dissemination of the study findings.
Over this past semester, two graduate students were employed to work on data anlaysis. One student has been very involved with the data analysis process that involves raising the study data to a theoretical level. The other student has taken on a primary role related to manuscript preparation and dissemination of the study findings in other scholarly venues. In addition, a junior faculty member assisted with the preparation of a manuscript that will be submitted for possible publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
At this time, six scholarly publications are in progress; as well, two abstracts that are being prepared for conference presentations. All of these academic endeavors will provide a set of recommendations for clinical service providers that work with women who have experienced trauma and are involved in problem gambling.
