6. A SOCIAL HISTORY OF GAMBLING IN ALBERTA TO 1970

This history of gambling in Alberta and its role in Alberta's diverse popular cultures identifies the province's gambling traditions, as well as attempts by agencies and government to either suppress or regulate gambling, and the persistence of gambling as part of Alberta's culture. Status (Complete):

This project has been integral to the development of general conclusions about the social history of gambling in the Province of Alberta. It has also helped to explain the public's changing attitudes toward this activity.

Several scholarly conference papers based on this research have been completed. "Poker and the Police in Alberta to 1939" was presented at the 2003 Western Social Science Association Meeting in Las Vegas and "Women and Bingo in Alberta, 1920-1970" was presented at the Association's 2004 meeting in Salt Lake City. In addition, lectures on this topic were given at the 2002 Alberta Undergraduate History Conference and to the Department of History, University of Lethbridge. Ultimately, this research will be used to in the production of a book manuscript.

The Alberta Gaming Research Institute provides grant funding to support peer-endorsed academic investigations into many aspects of gambling research. The contents, recommendations, and findings of the associated research reports, posted on this website, represent the views of the researcher(s).
