DESCRIPTION
The Century Casino & Hotel was built in 2006 and began opertaions as one of the City of Edmonton's first “destination-style casinos”. It is located in northeast Edmonton and owned by Century Casinos, Inc.
HISTORY
The Century Casino & Hotel opened in November 2006 on the site of the old Londonderry Hotel at a cost of approximately $35.8-million. It was originally to be called the Celebrations Casino and Hotel.
OWNERSHIP & MANAGEMENT
Century Casino is owned and operated by Century Casinos, Inc. of Vienna, Austria. This international casino and entertainment company trades on the NASDAQ (CNTY: US) and Vienna stock exchanges. Century become the sole owner of the property when it bought out a 43.6% interest held by a non-affiliated minority partner in December, 2005.
Century Casinos, Inc. is an international casino entertainment company that owns and operates Century Casino & Hotels in Cripple Creek and Central City, Colorado, and in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and the Century Casino in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The Company also operates casinos aboard luxury cruise vessels. Through its Austrian subsidiary, Century Casinos Europe GmbH, the Company holds a 33.3% ownership interest in Casinos Poland Ltd., the owner and operator of seven full casinos in Poland.
RECENT EVENTS
The net operating revenue at the Century Casino in Edmonton increased 14% in Q2/10 vs. Q2/09 according to a company presentation dated October, 2010.
The Century Casino & Hotel opened in November 2006 at a cost of approximately $35.8-million.
In October, 2006, the River Cree Resort and Casino opened on the Enoch reserve just west of the City of Edmonton.
COMPETITION
Century Casino operates in competition with four existing traditional Edmonton casinos, one Edmonton racino, and a First Nation casino on the Enoch reserve just west of the city limits. A seventh competitor is located in St. Albert, a city adjacent to Edmonton.
