ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT OF ONLINE GAMING USING DATA MINING
Project Approved 2005-06

Dr. Henry Leung (Principal Investigator)
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Calgary

This proposal addresses the need for modeling online gaming from a systematic viewpoint to predict its impact in various allied fields. Data mining concepts will be used to investigate the impact of online gaming on the economy, legal frauds, and problem gambling. To address the online privacy issue during data collection, a privacy-preserving technique will be used to perturb the original data so that a higher utility of the modified data is retained while ensuring that privacy is not jeopardized.

Status (Complete)

The main objective of this research was to use Data Mining methodologies to assess the socio-economic impact of Internet gambling. Due to constraints, the scope of the work was limited to analyzing the existing data logs related to Internet gambling and surveys which have considered Internet gambling as one of the parameters.

A project report titled “Bayesian Analysis of Online Gambling” was authored by a PhD student who was recruited to work on this project.
