Compared to other disorders and addictions, research on gambling treatment and prevention is still in its infancy. While there is some controversy on what causes an individual to develop an addiction most researchers appear to agree that the cause is multi-factored, affected by a combination of social and biological components.  Problem gambling is a serious societal issue that deserves more thorough and systematic research. Of particular concern is the lack of study on female PGs in order to develop more efficient treatments for PGs, their families and society.

The exploration of the progression taken into problem gambling by women will shed light on the current knowledge held in research, health and education services. It is imperative to closely examine empirical studies and subsequent dissemination of the research findings to identify what information is known or absent related to women’s’ trajectory into PG. This literature review will be dissemination into resources for women problem gamblers, practitioners, researchers, and training facilities in order to positively impact the women who are problem gamblers through treatment practices.

Status (April 2010)

A graduate student was hired to assist with a systematic literature review of research studies and grey literature. Citations for over 350 research articles were captured, stored and organized in an EndNote bibliographic software database. Numerous web sites containing grey literature were identified and parameters were developed in order to access the most relevant “informative” documents (dates, sources, and type of research/narrative).
